Day 498: Kind of Blue

Lyrics:
You lied through your teeth, you knew what the fuck you were doing.
You lied through your teeth, you knew just what to say.
You goddamn bitch, you told me everything would be ok.
You lied to my face, I had no idea.
You lied to my face, but you looked just the same,
You goddamn bitch I don't think I can trust you, not even your name.
You goddamn bitch I don't think I can trust you, nothing is the same.

Day 497: Not Blues

Not often that I have tomorrow's piece written in advance, but I do today.  Today it's electro.  Tomorrow it's blues.

Two Days Left!

Day 495: Vishnu

Here's one more taste of glitch music plus indian vocals.  With strings this time.

Day 493: outlast

less than a week to go!

Patches by FGL (except the bass and some effects).

Day 492: LIstening

It's just a simple electronic groove today.  Nothing too fancy.

Day 491: Mars Haiku

Flawless face of rouge,
Serene, silent elegance
Gracing her, named War

Today's work is for the Naviar Haiku project.

I wanted to make music that was alien and human at the same time.  It came somewhere near that.  Also, every patch used has "Mars" or "Martian" in it's title, so it's got that going for it.

Day 490: Drifting Along

So I can adequately inform the next iteration of Drift from New Atlantis Audio I used patches that were only in that refill today.  Came out very, very ambient.

Day 489: Ten Days Left

I'm pretty tired right now, so I don't have much time for commentary.

I will say that this was done mostly using sounds from New Atlantis Audio.

Day 488: Live it love it

An electro track for Monday.

No time to talk, got shit to do.

Day 487: Romance

Per one of my previous posts I wanted to take a stab at something that sounded "Romantic".  I don't know if this is that exactly, but it's a start.  Especially considering I've never tried something of this style before.

Enjoy.

Day 486: All along the pacemaker

For the Disquiet Junto:

My process in creating the "baseline" rhythm was to study the picture, in particular the top row, and look at the subdivisions therein. From the subdivisions I decided upon what would represent a "beat" for me and made those attacks a kick drum with additional noise and tonal elements built on top of it. I tried to vary the attack velocity based on the EEG readout to create some variety. It ended up being a bit more random than expected, but still musical in its own, more organic way. After this I added some "melodic" elements that are maybe less than melodic, but simultaneously created texture and melodic components. Finally, I automated the additional tonal and textural elements that were part of the kick drum and tried to shape the overall piece into something listenable and pleasant.

Day 485: Piano Haiku

Today's work is part of the Naviar Haiku project.

Here's the haiku:

A piano is a conversation

Day 484: Space Jammies

Only a moment to upload this and get on with the day.  It's short, but I'm really happy with it.  I think it's because of the horn.  See what you think.

Day 483: In your movie

Here is a short piece that is basically a music cue.  I feel like I've gotten pretty good at this brooding,
intense, ominous, type sound and now need to expand my chops into some other orchestral areas.  I'm thinking that I need to work on Romantic, Adventurous, and Comedic things as well.  Better go watch some movies.

This was all done with Miroslav Strings and samples from Nine Volt Audio Action Drums, Cinematic Edition.

Day 482: Thinking about thinking up

While deleting emails from LinkedIn I stopped and read one of them (I know, crazy).  It was about the "90 Day Music Licensing Challenge".  I investigated it a little more and after very little thought I bought the materials for the program.  For whatever reason I haven't pursued licensing in the way I should have, but after just dipping my toes into the material I am very excited/scared/happy to feel like I can do exactly what's being mentioned.   After having the success I had with writing music for some youtube commercials I feel/know I need to go after this.

I'm thinking about genres/styles to pursue and music that I should be making (that's "hot" right now) and I have some work to do.  I have 17 days left of the 500 Days project and then it will be on to new and different things.  There will be a bit less music for awhile, but hopefully, there will be more money once the new music arrives.

Day 480: Nigh

This is a pretty weird little glitch piece.  There are some strange things going on with compression that weren't intentional, but I decided to just keep them because they were so unique.

In these last 20 days I'm trying to "finish strong" as a friend of mine would say.  I want the material at the end to be as interesting as the beginning.  Truth be told, it should be better since I know a LOT more tricks now.

I'll let you be the judge.

Day 479: More Metal

For fans of Isis, Neurosis, Mogwai, or post-metal.

Done on the iPhone in Garageband.

Friday, April 11, 2014

Day 478: Lay Back

A chill, laid back beat for Friday.  Even though the weekend will be lots of work, this beat is still cool.

Audio field recordings are from the Lost and Found Refill from New Atlantis Audio.

Day 477: Leave this Better than you Found it

I was randomly perusing profiles on Soundcloud yesterday and I came across this guy's.  He's got some neat stuff on his profile and he had the beat to this track posted there as something he couldn't do anything with.  I did something with it.

Day 476: Haiku

Third entry into the Naviar Haiku project.

I imagined the sun rising on an alien world and the day beginning.  Initially there are only a few things moving around, but with a few minutes life awakens and goes about its day, exploring, eating, hunting, hiding, doing what ever it does.

There are some scary things here, there are some cute things here, there are some things here.  Welcome to Tropical Hoth.

At the first sunlight

Seven happy roosters yell

A new day is here

Day 475: Listening like a boss

A glitch hop piece.  Laid-back and groovy.

Am going to start on seriously licensing some music after I get done with this project.  24 more days left.

Day 474: Last on the Phone

This is the last track from my lost "phone" songs.

Here's a blurb about it:

I love the book, 1984, written by George Orwell. If you haven't read it you should probably go buy it right now. It's the internet, so you can literally be reading it within 5 minutes. I think it's one of the most important books of the 20th century. As such, this song is a little bit of an homage to it. I won't spoil the ending if you haven't read it, but these lyrics refer to the last page of the book.
Again, this was all recorded in Garageband on an iPhone (yes, even the slide guitar
- there's an app and attachment for that). I mastered it in Reason.

lyrics:
This is our way to control,
another method to control.
This is our way to control,
Another way to control you.
Look behind you what you'll see is love.
This is our way to control,
another method to control.
This is our way to control,
Another way to control you.
One more way, One more day.

Day 473: Another from the phone

So here's the second one that I left on the phone when putting together i, Album.  It's post rock.  As with the others it was created in Garageband on the iPhone, then mastered in Reason.

Lyrics:
Bring me the fire.

Day 472: Forgot a Couple

Was going thru Garageband on my phone, trying to clear up space, and realized there were a few tracks that were supposed to be included on i, Album last November.  Totally missed them, so I'll be putting them up here the next few days.

The track was done on my phone, 100%.  I mastered it in Reason to give it more "oomph".

Day 471: I just did this

So I posted today's track just a few hours ago and now I'm about to post tomorrow's track.

It's my second stab at the Naviar Haiku Project.  A collaborative group, like Disquiet Junto, but focused on a simpler idea.  Each week is inspired by a haiku.

This is the haiku for this week:

Sunday afternoon
The phone ringing
In a vague way

Day 470: Minimal

Playing with Crapre some more.  I hope that it doesn't go away after it's no longer offered in the Propellerheads Shop.  It makes a boring instrument instantly interesting.

Day 469: Round and Round

Thirty days left now.

Today we go on a reverb-soaked, ambient world music trip across the seas to distant lands where robots try to find their chakras and humans try to become robots.

Day 468: Not Really Crap At All

So, for April Fool's Day Peff released the Crapre.... except it's awesome.  It simulates really crappy tape recording and does a great job.  I mean, instant lo-fi experience.  I used it with different settings on guitar, drums, and vox here.  Hope you enjoy.

Lyrics:
Someone stole my front tire.
Some stole my innertube.
I'm gonna hunt them down.
Make them a fool.

Someone broke into my bike lock.
Stole the code and the key.
I wish I knew what their name was.
I'd steal their identity.

I want my bike back.

You are so full shit,
you are so full of it.

You are so full of rage.

Day 467: Depths of Despair, Cave of Wonders

Piano improv recorded in the depths of despair.  Altered in the Light of Day.  Using Sugarbytes Slice Arranger, piano patch from Reason Pianos, and good ol' Scream4 for distortion.

Personal drama really sucks sometimes.
